Interactive Video Platforms, Software and Tools in a comprehensive list

Dutch company Blue Billywig offers a versatile product that can be used for creating interactive product informational videos, shopping videos, and much more. Their interactive video platform lists two types of interactions that their interactive video editor could add to a video. Branching and overlays. Branching lets viewers choose how to navigate through the video. Overlays let you add some interactions to the base video you uploaded. interactions such as clickable URLs, menus, or quizzes are available.

The website says a free 30-day trial is possible. However it is fully focused on businesses.

Blue Billywig is a company where you can outsource complete interactive video productions. The platform has many possibilities but is also complex to use. If you have a substantial budget and want to outsource the process from A to Z yourself, Blue Billywig is an excellent company.

Hapyak was acquired by the online video platform Brightcove in 2021. The marketing for Hapyak has been discontinued after the acquisition by Brightcove. It is no longer possible to test Hapyak separately without using Brightcove.

With Brightcove, you have multiple different interactive features you can add. These features include clickable buttons and hotspots, chaptering, quizzes, custom forms, and branching of your video. Features like these can be added to your recorded video or a live stream. At this moment, you can't unfortunately try out the platform without having to get in touch with them first.

Cinema8 focuses on gamification, eCommerce, eLearning, and Marketing. They allow users to create interactive videos by using functionalities such as clickable areas, sticky hotspots, questions, buttons, drawing elements, and more. Cinema8 looks like a comprehensive technology platform.

There is AI integration available with Cinema8. This is in the form of object & motion detection. It is mostly used for the sticky hotspots that follow a moving object in the frame.

At the moment of writing they offer four pricing plans. Depending on your needs they will range from $249 up to $1199 per month. There is also a custom plan for enterprises. There is no open trial period, so we haven't been able to test the platform ourselves.

The Australia-based ClickView is an interactive video company that is geared toward online education. Knowing that television and YouTube series score well among today’s students, they have started with interactive videos in ClickView Original Series. The platform can be viewed in a web browser or you can download the app to view it on your phone.

They have several videos you can use to support your lesson material in classes and create interactive quizzes. Or you can add your own by uploading the video to their platform. The interactive video tool has questions, annotations, or images you can add to your video. These can be added anywhere in the video timeline, but cannot customized any further with different brand colors or placements in the video frame. It also seems that chapters are in the video to skip to the right information as a viewer. But we weren't able to figure out yet how to customize them.

Signing up is free, but you will be asked to add your educational email and school before your account is made. This could be a problem if you are not a teacher or a student, making the platform harder to use. The same goes for sharing the videos. If you have an account, you can share the video only with registered users of the platform. When someone opens the link or embed they will be prompted to log in before they can watch the video content.

Texan interactive video website DilogR provides a video hosting platform and interactivity tool focused mostly on marketing.

They have a 14-day free trial to try out the platform. After that, the platform offers three subscription-based plans to choose from.

With Dilogr, you can create a dialog between you and your customers and track their level of engagement. They offer a combination of interactive video, questions, surveys, polls, and more in their tool.

Dot.vu is an interactive content platform to engage, entertain, and educate customers with interactive content. Interactive video is a part of the entire platform and focuses mostly on marketing.

On their platform, you can add interactions such as hotspots, navigation menus, and forms to your videos to make them interactive. They also have an analytics dashboard. Here you can track which viewer used one of your interactions and track the times an interaction might have been used.

At the time of writing you can start on their platform for free with one live project that has some visitor limitations. After that, they offer monthly subscriptions starting at quite a high price of $200 a month.

Edpuzzle is aimed at teachers. Via Edpuzzle you can add interactions and voice-over to existing YouTube videos or you can upload your own video. The interaction list is minimal. Only two types of questions and notes are on the list of interactions you can add. In the notes, there is the possibility to add a hyperlink.

The interactions are added to the timeline and will show up in a sidebar when the video arrives at that particular timestamp. The teacher can send the finalized video to their students and view the results.  You can, however, upload a video or use a video from another teacher.

Edpuzzles interactivity is minimal yet effective. If you, however, need more interactivity in your video then hihaho might be the better option for you.

American company Engajer offers an interactive video platform on which you can build an interactive video tree through questions. This way the viewer can decide their path throughout the video. It offers additional features such as an e-commerce plugin and a system to track your viewers. Both interactions and technical features are limited compared to our hihaho platform.

Exaltive is a technology for helping businesses to better connect with their prospects, customers, and employees by applying the unique power of video to guide the functional needs of websites and applications in an immersive single screen experience.

Exaltive does not have an open trial. Therefore, we have not been able to test the software ourselves. The blog has not been up to date for years. The same goes for the social media channels. We don't know how active Exaltive still is in maintaining their platform.

GuidingTube offers a simple tool to make your videos interactive.  They offer a button interaction, a conditional choice interaction, input fields, and a menu. You can also use an analytics dashboard and personalize your videos. You can request an online meeting at their website to learn more about the platform. We could not find a free trial to try out the platform.

At the time of writing this, pricing for using the platform starts at $500. Unfortunately, it does not say if this is per video, user, or subscription fee.

For publishing 5 interactive videos, you pay a monthly subscription license of €219 . This fee is higher for A-brands and wholesale customers.

Klynt is an interactive video software application for new media storytellers. Klynt makes it easy to create rich interactive narratives by mixing video, photo, audio, text, and web resources to produce powerful interactive storytelling. You can organize your videos and story with a mind map of sorts, by dragging and dropping uploaded or linked videos into that map. In addition, you can add audio, hyperlinks, videos, and more to a video. Klynt is used by journalists, filmmakers, photographers, web designers, teachers working for news portals, NGOs, web agencies, film production companies, and universities.

Kumullus is a dynamic French edtech company offering a sophisticated platform for creating and deploying interactive videos. Aimed at training employees and networks, it seamlessly integrates with all leading Learning Management Systems (LMS/LXP) and web platforms. While Kumullus' website is primarily in French, its backend is also accessible in English, enhancing its usability for a broader audience.

The platform boasts comprehensive features that empower users to craft engaging and effective training materials. With its user-friendly interface and versatile capabilities, Kumullus emerges as a compelling solution for organizations seeking to enhance their training initiatives.

Kumullus is free to try. Pricing starts at €149 a month. This is a difference from hihaho, where you can also publish interactive videos for a one-time fee.

Luma1 is an interactive video platform dedicated to creating safety and procedural training. The Luma1 platform brings video interactivity and data together for compliance and certification.

Luma1 and hihaho are platforms that both have many technical features. Hihaho allows you to pay per video, pricing plans for Luma1 are available on request.

Mindstamp is an all-around tool to add interactions to a video. It especially has many fun question types that are suitable for sales and marketing. You can have someone set a date in the video for example or have your own video recorded as an answer to a question. Mindstamp has fewer publishing options than hihaho and does not work based on a timeline like hihaho, but has a list of interactions to the right of your video and markers in the player bar to show where the interactions are.

Nearpod is a platform that provides real-time insights into student understanding through interactive lessons, videos, gamified learning, formative assessments, and activities.

Nearpod is designed for creating online lessons for elementary and secondary schools, primarily using interactive slides, which can also include videos. Users can upload their own videos or use existing ones from YouTube or BBC Worldwide, as well as Nearpod's template lessons and custom mp4 uploads. Interactions within videos are limited to open-ended and multiple-choice questions added to the video's timeline.

The strengths of Nearpod lie in its ability to create comprehensive interactive lessons. Interactive videos can be embedded within these lessons or used as standalone tests or exams. However, for those focused solely on interactive video content, Nearpod's capabilities are somewhat limited.

Playfilm is an interactive video platform based in Spain, focused on marketing and lead generation. It facilitates the creation of interactive video ads for use on social media, allowing users to post links to interactive videos through social media stories, for example.

From the examples on their website, Playfilm primarily employs question interactions over background video footage. They offer a platform for creating your own interactive videos, although currently, it is available only to a select group of companies. As a result, we have not been able to test it ourselves.

PlayPosit provides an online learning environment featuring an interactive video tool that allows teachers to embed time-embedded activities within their videos. Users can add various elements such as images, equations, and audio.

Although multiple interactive features can be added, they open in a sidebar rather than layering over the video. By default, these interactions pause the video, but this setting can be adjusted in the advanced options for each interaction.

As of August 16th, 2022, PlayPosit's interactive video design studio is part of WeVideo. Pricing is available via WeVideo.

Interactive video company Rapt Media, that is a part of Kaltura, offers a cloud-based platform to create interactive videos for which you can just drag and drop the content into the video. With this interactive video software, you can also track which paths your viewers take within your video.

Since its acquisition by Kaltura in 2018, Rapt Media's website has remained unchanged. It seems that Rapt Media's interactive video technology is fully integrated into Kaltura and no longer developed independently. If you want to work with Rapt Media, you have to work with Kaltura. Therefore, not much value should be attached to the number of employees on LinkedIn.

Smartzer specializes in creating shoppable interactive videos, ideal for those looking to sell products directly through their videos. It features a user-friendly drag-and-drop interface for adding clickable hotspots. Additionally, Smartzer offers a wishlist feature and recommended items. The platform supports multiple currencies and languages, catering to a global audience.

Stornaway is a tool to make interactive branched videos yourself. This works based on fragments and choices that you link together in a storymap. The result is a video where the viewer chooses where they want to go in the story. Stornaway offers everything to make your branched scenarios as good and creative as possible. Stornaway's latest features are promising. For example, you can now use practical templates and you can edit your videos in Adobe Express.

ThingLink allows you to make multiple types of content interactive. One of those types is video. ThinkLink offers 5 interactions that can all be opened as a popup via a pin in the video/image.

Their platform is available on their website or you can download the Thinglink app via the App Store or Google Play. This makes it possible to edit interactive videos on your phone.

The options that you have per interaction are somewhat limited. As far as we have been able to find, you cannot link follow-up actions to interactions, such as jumping to another timestamp or interaction within the video. There is an option to add a hyperlink to a few interactions.

Interactive video platform Verse allows you to work with storytelling, Q&As, and more by having interactions such as hotspots, slideshows, questions, and more. In addition, you can add a pathfinder and chapters for easy navigation and a choose-your-own-path type of video. Personal videos can be created for free, commercial projects (including training and education) require an active paid account.

Viddler specializes in interactive video for healthcare. With role-play, in-player interactivity, and gamification, their tool wants to help to show improvement over time and across teams. There is little information about the Viddler platform to be found on the website. They do not provide any information about what interactions they offer or the ability to test the software. However, it is possible to schedule a demo.

With Vidversity’s interactive video tool, you can turn your lectures into interactive learning courses. You can add questions, resources, and also notes to the video. Record videos in the app or upload them yourself.

Vidversity offers several tools. On the one hand, an authoring tool that allows you to create video learning. These are actually video slides interspersed with questions, etc. The interaction is not really in the video but more as separate slides. They also offer a tool called Benchmark that allows instructors to have students create video within an LMS. For example, to demonstrate mastery of a particular skill. Here students can add their own text interactions. Just like hihaho, you can also outsource the production to Vidversity.

Viewbix is an interactive video platform on which you can create interactive ads using customization options in their editor and calls-to-action apps, such as Follow Us buttons, email capture, coupons, etc. There is no open trial, so we were unable to test the software ourselves. Both interactions and technical features are limited compared to hihaho.

Vimeo (formerly Wirewax) has an interactive video platform to build your own interactive videos. Within the interactive studio of Vimeo you can add hotspots, overlays, quizzes and add-to cart-buttons. It is possible to add branching to your video.

You can even automatically add chapters, To be honest, Vimeo is a wonderful platform for creating and hosting your interactive video. Interactive video is available as a paid add-on option for Enterprise Vimeo users. If you are already an Enterprise user with Vimeo then it is great you can publish your interactive videos on the same video platform as your linear videos.

We weren't able to get a trial account, but their sample videos give us the impression that Vudoo's focus is on shoppable videos. You can open beautiful popups within a video and then highlight a product and add a link to a website. We couldn't find the options to create menus or ask questions in the example videos. Vudoo has not provided pricing details yet.

With the interactive video platform Wootag, you can create interactive ads, interactive display ads and b2b sales videos. Add polls, sign-up forms or buy-now buttons.

Wootag focuses on adding interactive tags to your timeline. Every tag activates an interactive element, but this also means it doesn't give you the full reigns. For more advanced interaction options, such as branching and combining different interactions, other platforms are probably a better choice.
